UNESCO registers Iran's Shushtar water system

The Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System in Iran's Khuzestan Province has been registered on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. Inscribed as a masterpiece of creative genius, Iran's Shushtar water system is the country's 10th cultural heritage site to be registered on the UN list. The site dates back to the time of the Achaemenid king Darius the Great in the 5th century BCE and involves two main diversion canals on the Karun River one of which, Gargar canal, is still in use providing water to the city of Shushtar via a series of tunnels that supply water to mills. The system forms a cliff from which water cascades into a downstream basin and enters south of the city enabling the people of Shushtar to plant orchards and create farms over an area of 40,000 hectares. Also known as Mianab, the site includes the Salasel Castel, the operation centre of the hydraulic system as well as the tower where the water level is measured, damns, bridges, basins and mills. The Armenian Monastic Ensembles (2008), Bisotun (2006), Soltaniyeh Dome (2005), Pasargadae (2004), Bam and its Cultural Landscape (2004), Takht-e Soleyman (2003), Tchogha Zanbil (1979), Persepolis (1979) Isfahan's Naqsh-e-Jahan Square are the other Iranian sites registered on the UNESCO list.

Iranian Minister of Science, Research and Technology Mohammad-Mehdi Zahedi has condemned the scientific apartheid imposed by certain Western states. “Certain European countries have created a kind of scientific apartheid. They do not permit researchers of other states do research in specific courses,” Zahedi told IRNA on the sidelines of the UNESCO's World Conference on Higher Education 2009 in Paris on Sunday. “We regard this approach as a kind of discrimination and call for a fight against it,” he added. The minister said that sciences should not be monopolized by certain countries and called on other states to support Iran in a fight against scientific apartheid. The four-day UNESCO's World Conference on Higher Education 2009 opened in Paris Sunday. It plans to build squarely on the fundamental principles set out by delegates to the first conference in 1998. More than 1,000 delegates from governments, national, regional and international organizations, and individual higher education institutions will tackle the new dynamics of higher education and research, in particular shaping strategies for societal change and development. Political head of the Islamic Revolution's Guards Corps says that no one can remain impartial following the disputed presidential election. “Today, no one is impartial. There are two currents; those who defend and support the revolution and the establishment, and those who are trying to topple it,” said General Yadollah Javani at a conference Sunday, according to IRNA. “Those who wanted to topple the revolution made a mistake in their calculations,” he said. “They had ignored the awareness of the people and the role of the Leader (of the Islamic Revolution).” Referring to the color green, that was adopted by supporters of the defeated presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi, he said: “By setting off a 'green wave' they wanted to pressurize the Leader and the establishment and thereby they placed themselves in opposition and those who wanted to threaten the establishment through disturbance were thus exposed.” Iran became the scene of opposition rallies after Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner of the 10th presidential election with nearly two-thirds of the vote. Defeated candidates Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi rejected the result as fraudulent and demanded a re-run. General Javani, however, said the measures taken by the opposition were predictable and that the IRGC was prepared to counter the “velvet revolution” before the June 12 election. “We came up against a deep mischief during this election. A mischief that gave birth to the new divisions,” Javani said. “During these events, the eye of the mischief was damaged, but it was not blinded. Now the eye of the mischief must be blinded completely and gouged out, and this can be done by illuminating the events behind the scenes.” Javani is not the only IRGC commander who has been commenting about the disputed elections in recent days. Speaking at the same conference, Commander of the IRGC Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari said: “We are convinced that the IRGC must play a deciding role in the preservation and continuation of the revolution.” He, however, added that that this should in no way be interpreted as “meddling” by the IRGC in politics. Jafari referred to the handing over the control of the situation to the IRGC and the taking of the initiative by the IRGC to calm the situation, which, despite some confusions, caused “a revival of the revolution and clarification of the value positions of the establishment at home and abroad.” “These events put us in a new stage of the revolution and political struggles, and all of us must fully comprehend its dimensions,” General Jafari emphasized.

Israel drills sought Iran defense info

Israel's military exercise in June was reportedly conducted to put to test the Russian-made air-defense missile system supplied to Iran.

According to a report, the early June Israeli air force maneuver over Greece was aimed at gathering information in a bid to develop tactics to beat the advanced Russian-made S-300 air-defense missile system believed to be on the way to Iran. The multi-target anti-aircraft/missile systems have reportedly been deployed to the Greek island of Crete. Earlier in June, a New York Times report revealed that over 100 Israeli F-16s and F-15s flew more than 900 miles off the southern Mediterranean island of Crete, roughly the distance from Israeli airfields to Iranian nuclear enrichment facilities. Following the report, the Greek Defense Ministry issued a statement, reassuring that its military maneuver with Israel was carried out within the framework of Greece-Israel military cooperation and was by no means aimed at preparing for hostile action. According to The Cutting Edge News website, Greek officials also said that the S-300 had been 'turned off' during the Israeli maneuvers widely believed to be a 'dress rehearsal' for an airborne strike against Iran's nuclear facilities. Israel, believed to be the sole possessor of 200 to 400 nuclear warheads in the Middle East, has recently stepped up its war rhetoric against Iran accusing the country of pursuing a nuclear weapons program. On June 6, a day after the military exercise, Israeli deputy prime minister Shaoul Mofaz told the Yediot Aharonot that Tel Aviv would attack Iran if the country did not halt its nuclear activities. While the US and Israel accuse Tehran of making efforts to produce nuclear weapons, the most recent UN nuclear watchdog report on Tehran conceded that there is no link between the use of nuclear material and 'the alleged studies' of weaponization attributed to Iran by Western countries. In response to Western threats, IRGC's naval and ground forces staged a military exercise in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, solely aimed at demonstrating the country's defensive military capabilities against enemy threats.

Iran will target US bases if attacked

Iran says its Armed Forces would target the heart of Israel and 32 US bases before the dust settles from an attack on the country.

"If the enemy were confident that it would emerge victorious from an attack on Iran, they would not put it off for even another day," an aide to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Mojtaba Zolnoor said on Saturday. Today, through the efforts of Iranian experts, the military capabilities of the country's Armed Forces have reached an advanced level, he added. "If the US or Israel fire one bullet against Iran, the Iranian Armed Forces will not hesitate to target the heart of Israel and 32 US military bases in the region before the dust settles," warned Ayatollah Khamenei's representative in the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC). Iran has repeatedly warned that its Armed Forces are fully prepared to immediately deliver a crushing response to any offensive on Iranian territory. Iran's words of caution come following escalating speculation that the Israeli maneuver in early June was held in preparation for a war with the Islamic Republic.
